DIY: Folk Art Hair Brushes

Looking for a unique and heartfelt gift to celebrate your favorite gals this Galentine’s Day? These DIY folk art hair brushes are the perfect blend of creativity and charm. Not only are they beautiful and functional, but they’re also a thoughtful way to show your friends how much they mean to you!

SUPPLIES

  • Wooden hair brushes (paddle or oval brushes work best)

  • Acrylic paints in your chosen color palette

  • Paintbrushes (fine-tip for details, medium for larger designs)

  • Clear varnish or sealant (to protect your artwork)

  • Paper towels and water cup (for cleaning brushes)

  • Palette or small plates (for mixing paint)

  • Optional:

  • Sandpaper (optional, for prepping the surface)

  • Painter’s tape (for creating clean edges or patterns)

INSTRUCTIONS

1. Plan Your Design

Sketch your design on paper or lightly draw it on the brush handle with a pencil. Popular folk art themes include florals, hearts, vines, or bows.

2. Add Folk Art Details

Use fine-tip brushes to paint your design. Some ideas:

  • Floral motifs: Paint vines, flowers, and leaves in warm colors.

  • Hearts and dots: Scatter hearts and polka dots to fill space.

  • Geometric patterns: Add stripes, zigzags, or diamond shapes.

Work in layers, letting each layer dry before adding more details.

3. Personalise It

Make it extra special by including your friend’s initials, favorite colors, or symbols that represent their personality.

4. Seal the Design

Once your design is completely dry, apply a clear varnish or sealant to protect it from wear and tear. Use a matte or glossy finish, depending on your preference. Allow the brush to dry for at least 24 hours before use.

PRESENTATION IDEAS

  • Pair the hairbrush with other small items like a silk scrunchie, mini shampoo bars, or a handwritten note for a complete Galentine’s gift set.

  • Wrap it in tissue paper and tie it with a ribbon for an extra touch!
