If you missed our Galentine's Trinket Box Workshop, don’t worry! We’ve got you covered with this detailed step-by-step guide to create your own vintage heart cake trinket box at home. This project is perfect for anyone who loves a mix of crafting, baking-inspired décor, and vintage charm. Let’s dive in and create a beautiful trinket box together! 💖

Supplies

  • Heart-shaped trinket box (we used wooden boxes from Etsy)

  • Decoden cream in your favorite colors (decoden can be purchased from most craft stores or via Etsy)

  • Acrylic craft or wood paint (make sure to select the right paint based on your box material—wood needs acrylic paint, while plastic or metal may need a specific type of paint)

  • Paintbrushes (small ones for detailed work and larger ones for base coats)

  • Piping bags and piping tips (some Decoden creams come with their own piping bags and tips, but you can also pick tips based on your desired piping design)

  • Scraper (for smoothing out the Decoden cream)

  • Decorative elements such as faux strawberries, cherries, pearls, ribbons, bows, or any other cute embellishments that match your theme

  • Tweezers (for precise placement of decorations)

  • Optional: Preferred fabric and glue for lining the inside of the box for an added touch!

Instructions

1. Prep the Box:

Start by preparing your box. If you’ve chosen a wooden box, lightly sand the surface with fine-grit sandpaper. This will help create a slight texture that allows the paint and Decoden cream to stick better. You can skip this step if your box is already smooth, but it can be particularly useful for ensuring a long-lasting finish. Once sanded, wipe off any dust with a clean cloth to ensure a smooth painting surface.

Note: When sanding, painting, or using Decoden, make sure to work in a well-ventilated area. If necessary, wear a mask to protect yourself from any fumes or dust. Safety first!

2. Base Coat:

Apply two coats of white acrylic paint to your box, making sure to allow time for it to dry between coats. This white base will create a clean, neutral canvas for the rest of your design. For best results, paint both the outer and inner areas of the lid and sides of the box. Be sure to pay attention to intricate details like hinges or edges that could be overlooked. Allow the paint to fully dry between each coat—this ensures a smooth, even finish.

3. Create Your Base Design:

Now comes the fun part—deciding whether you want to paint, use Decoden, or combine both methods!

  • Painting: If you prefer a smooth, clean look, simply apply two coats of your desired color (this could be pastels, metallics, or bold shades). Be sure to cover any intricate designs, such as hinges, the underside of the box, or small crevices. Let each layer dry fully before applying the next.

  • Decoden: For a more realistic, “frosting-like” effect, apply Decoden cream to the surface. Decoden gives your box the appearance of a freshly decorated cake, with a fun, textured finish. Using your scraper, apply a thin layer of Decoden glue to the box and then at a 45-degree angle and spread it evenly across the box with your scraper tool. Don’t worry if it gets a bit messy—it’s all part of the charm! Build up the layers gradually until the entire base is covered. We recommend avoiding the bottom of the box, as Decoden can prevent it from sitting flat.

After applying the Decoden, allow the base to dry for 3-4 hours to ensure it doesn’t get smudged while piping.

4. Piping:

If you’re using a piping bag, insert your piping tip of choice (larger tips are perfect for rosettes, while smaller ones are great for intricate designs). Fill the bag with Decoden cream and seal the top securely. To ensure the perfect amount of pressure, tie the end of the bag tightly.

Practice piping on a piece of parchment paper to get comfortable with the technique and pressure needed. Once you're confident, start piping your design directly onto the box. You can go for swirls, roses, or any design you love to add extra texture and charm!

5. Add Decorations:

Once you’ve piped your design, it’s time to add decorations! While the Decoden cream is still soft, place your decorative elements onto the surface. Use tweezers for precise placement—this will help with delicate items like faux pearls, tiny strawberries, or bows. Gently press each decoration into the decoden cream to ensure they stick securely.

6. Drying Time:

Let your vintage heart cake trinket box dry for 12-24 hours. It’s important not to touch or move it during this time, as Decoden can smudge easily while it’s still drying. Make sure it’s in a safe place where it won’t be disturbed.

7. Optional Lining:

For an added touch, line the inside of the trinket box with fabric. Cut the fabric to fit the bottom of the box, then glue it in place. This is optional but provides a soft interior for storing your special trinkets!
