DIY: Denim Patchwork Tshirts
Patchwork t-shirts are the perfect way to combine creativity and sustainability while adding something new to your wardrobe!
Supplies
A t shirt or tank top of your choosing
¼ to ½ metre of denim depending on your design
This project is perfect for repurposing fabric scraps or giving new life to an old pair of jeans!
Letter or shape stencils
These can be easily DIY’d by tracing and cutting out some paper, using thicker card stock makes for sturdier stencils.
Interfacing or iron-on hem tape
Sewing thread & needle
Fabric scissors
Pencil or chalk
Iron and ironing board
Instructions
1. Plan Your Design
Decide on the shape or pattern you'd like to create.
Some cute and easy options include hearts, stars, or your name!
Sketch out your design on some paper (cardstock works best) and cut out to create your stencils.
Using these stencils, sketch the design onto the denim fabric using a pencil or chalk.
2. Cut Out the Design
Carefully cut out the design using fabric scissors.
If you’re creating letters or intricate shapes, it pays to take your time to get clean edges and lines.
3. Prepare the Design with Interfacing
Cut a piece of interfacing slightly smaller than your design.
Interfacing will make the fabric more stable and prevent fraying.
Place the interfacing on the back of your denim design (adhesive side down).
Use an iron to adhere the interfacing to the denim following the manufacturer's instructions.
Alternatively, if you do not have interfacing, you can use hemming tape and cut small pieces to apply to your design.
4. Attach the Design to the Shirt
Position your design on the shirt or tank top.
Play around with placement until you’re happy with the look.
Center designs like initials or shapes, or place them along the hem or shoulder.
Once satisfied, use your iron to secure the design onto the shirt using the interfacing or hem tape.
Hold the iron on the design for a few seconds at a time until it’s fully attached. Recommendation to use a bit of stream when ironing to help ensure the interface completely bonds with the fabric.
5. Stitch for Extra Security
To ensure your design stays in place through washes and wear, stitch around the edges.
If you have a sewing machine, you can use a straight stitch or if you are sewing by hand, a running stitch or blanket stitch works best.
Extra Tips!
Use different washes of denim to create even more of a patch work effect.
Take your design a step further by adding embellishments such as beads or rhinestones.
To help minimise fading or damage to your design, we recommend washing on a gentle cycle and air drying.
Use fraying spray on the edges to help prevent fraying before washing.
